Bonne Bedingfield

A painter who
switched to sugar.

I studied oil painting at Wesleyan College. I taught art in galleries and classrooms. And then, one day, I was asked to make my niece a Nemo cake — and I decided not to paint the fish, but to sculpt it.

The Short Version

From the canvas to the studio

I was born to make things. My parents told me early to find something I loved and become the very best at it — so I pursued a B.A. in Fine Arts with a concentration in oil painting, then taught and showed my work in local galleries.

Painting ended the day I learned I was pregnant — oil paint is toxic, and I wasn’t about to risk it. I started baking the way most pregnant women do: a lot. I bought a cake-decorating kit. Then a niece asked for a Nemo. When I posted that sculpture on Facebook, the rest became history.

I founded Beautifully Baked in 2015. Today it is a fine-art studio that happens to make dessert.

Confession

I have an affinity
for the strange —
and the somewhat dark.

Ask me who I’d invite to a dinner party and I’ll name a countess, the Elephant Man, and Alfred Hitchcock. I grew up in a house I’m fairly sure was haunted. That sensibility leaks into the work — a beetle, a Jack-in-the-box, a disembodied hand from Wednesday — always dressed in elegance, never in gimmick.

Off the Clock

What keeps me grounded

Family

A husband, three children, and a home in Newnan. The work has always been built around the people who make it worth doing.

Faith

I’m not a dreamer. I keep myself open to being led down the right path — and it has, more than once, turned out to be a cake.

Dogs

Dogs, all day long. It’s no accident that half the sculptures in the studio are dogs.

My mother’s kitchen, my children’s achievements, a good sunset, a cloud formation that earns a second look. I make the most beautiful cakes I know how to make — but the people I make them for are the whole point. “To be kind is more important than to be right.” I try to hold that in the studio as much as anywhere else.

Work With Me

Let’s make
something together.
